Your sonographer will give you results of what they find straight away. The Doppler scan will take just a few minutes during your regular ultrasound scan (RCOG 2015). This creates an image on a screen showing the sonographer how the blood is flowing (Sheps 2019) and gives them a picture of how your baby's doing. They also bounce off your baby’s blood circulation system. The transducer sends out sound waves that bounce off red blood cells as they flow to your baby's body via the cord. The person carrying out the scan (sonographer) will put some gel on your tummy and move a hand-held device (transducer) over your skin. Most ultrasounds have a Doppler function. You can have a Doppler scan at the same time as a normal ultrasound scan, as it uses the same equipment. This helps to show whether they’re getting all the oxygen and nutrients they need via the placenta. What is a Doppler scan?A Doppler scan measures the blood flow through the umbilical cord and around different parts of your baby's body, such as the brain and heart. Midwives also use a Doppler to check a baby's heartbeat and measure labour contractions. It's also a useful way to check your baby's wellbeing and growth if there are any concerns. Your midwife may offer you a Doppler scan if they think you may be at risk of complications, such as pre-eclampsia, that can affect how well the placenta works.
